The common green grasshopper (Omocestus viridulus) is a Palearctic species of grasshopper found across Europe, parts of Asia, and as far east as Siberia and Mongolia. Known for its vibrant green coloration, it often features some brown markings, with males distinguishable by their lack of red coloring on the abdomen. These grasshoppers thrive in moderately wet habitats with long grass, such as meadows and grasslands.

A fascinating aspect of their behavior is their stridulation, the process of producing songs by rubbing their hind legs against their wings. Males use these songs to attract mates, with each song characterized by crescendos of increasing intensity. Interestingly, females may also respond with their own songs when ready to mate.

The life cycle of O. viridulus begins with eggs laid in the soil or near grass roots, hatching into nymphs in April. These nymphs resemble miniature adults and molt several times before maturing. This species is typically active from April to October, completing one generation per year.

An important contributor to ecosystem health, O. viridulus feeds on common grasses, promoting plant diversity. Despite being sensitive to habitat changes, their reproductive success is remarkably resilient to temperature fluctuations, ensuring their continued presence in diverse environments.
