THE PREHISTORIC STARE

❃ Standing motionless in the swamps of central Africa, the shoebill looks less like a modern bird than a survivor from the age of dinosaurs. Reaching up to a meter and a half tall, this towering gray giant is named for its enormous shoe-shaped bill — a huge, hooked, straw-colored beak, broad as a clog and edged with razor-sharp margins, capable of decapitating prey in a single strike.

❃ Its hunting style is pure patience. A shoebill can stand frozen for hours in the papyrus marshes of South Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia, waiting for a lungfish, water snake, or even a baby crocodile to surface for air. When the moment comes, it lunges in a violent, explosive collapse of head and bill known as a "death strike," clamping down with enough force to seize prey most other birds wouldn't dare attempt.

❃  Solitary and eerily still, the shoebill is famous for its unblinking stare and the loud machine-gun clatter of its bill, used to greet a mate at the nest. Fewer than eight thousand are thought to remain across the wetlands of central Africa, their numbers slowly falling as marshes are drained and disturbed. Half statue, half predator, it remains one of the most extraordinary birds alive — and one of the few that seems to stare right back.
