THE CAVE-DWELLING DUCKLING
❃ Named for the tiny duck-like face that peers out from the front of its shell, the rubber ducky isopod is one of the strangest small creatures to emerge from the underground world. Known to science only as Cubaris sp. — a species still awaiting a formal Latin name — it was discovered in the deep, damp limestone caves of Thailand as recently as 2017, one of many curious cave-dwellers only now coming to light.
❃ Despite the nickname, this is no ocean creature. It is a land-dwelling relative of the humble pill bug, thriving in the constant warmth and near-total humidity of the cave environment. The rounded front of its shell creates the unmistakable duck-bill silhouette, while a vivid contrast of pale yellow sides and dark charcoal back completes the toy-like resemblance that gives the species its name.
❃ Shy and secretive, the rubber ducky spends much of its life burrowed deep in the cave floor, and like all its relatives can roll into a tight defensive ball when disturbed — a behavior known as conglobation. Slow-moving and rarely seen, it remains one of the most remarkable of the cave isopods: a tiny, cave-born curiosity with a face impossible to forget.
